Acetylcholinesterase inhibition, antioxidant and identification of some chemical constituents of Phyllanthus atropurpureus cultivated in Egypt BJPS
Abdallah,Walid Elsayed; Elsayed,Wael Mohamady; Hassan,Rasmia Ali; Nazif,Naglaa Mohammed; Ali,Mohammed Ibrahim; Abdelshafeek,Khaled Abdelhady.
Investigation of the lipid constituents of the aerial parts of Phyllanthus atropurpureus resulted in isolation and identification of the fatty acid mixture which consists of eight acids with linolenic acid as major and the unsaponifiable fraction that contain a series of hydrocabons, sterols, in addition to one triterpene (α-amyrin). The acetone insoluble fraction was found to contain two fatty alcohols and three n-hydrocabons in which the n-eicosane is the most abundant (44.16%). The flavonoidal constituents were isolated from ethyl acetate and butanol fractions which were identified as: luteolin-7-O-glucoside, kaempferol 3-O-(p-coumaroylglucoside), kaempferitrin, luteolin and kaempferol. Evaluation of different extracts as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors...

Aguilar-García,Carlos; Cioccia,Anna María; Gavino,Victor; Gutiérrez,Marlén; Hevia,Patricio.
Dietary fiber requirements are met by only a small fraction of the population. There is need for supplemented foods to fill this gap. Rice bran (RB) is high in fiber and has antioxidant properties. The effects of rice bran fiber on several metabolic indicators and the antioxidant capacity of rice bran in rats was reported. Rats were divided into 4 dietary groups: Vitamin E-sufficient with (+VitE/RB+) or without (+VitE/RB-) rice bran; Vitamin E-deficient with (-VitE/RB+) or without (-VitE/RB-) rice bran. Food intake, growth and feed efficiency were similar in all groups but wet and dry fecal mass of the RB+ groups were 3 times higher than the RB- groups. Blood hemoglobin and liver iron were also similar among all groups. However, the liver VitE...

Mechanisms involved in anti-aging effects of guarana (Paullinia cupana) in Caenorhabditis elegans BJMBR
Arantes,L.P.; Machado,M.L.; Zamberlan,D.C.; da Silveira,T.L.; da Silva,T.C.; da Cruz,I.B.M.; Ribeiro,E.E.; Aschner,M.; Soares,F.A.A..
Guarana (Paullinia cupana) is habitually ingested by people in the Amazon region and is a key ingredient in various energy drinks consumed worldwide. Extension in longevity and low prevalence of chronic age-related diseases have been associated to habitual intake of guarana. Anti-aging potential of guarana was also demonstrated in Caenorhabditis elegans; however, the mechanisms involved in its effects are not clear. Herein, we investigated the putative pathways that regulate the effects of guarana ethanolic extract (GEE) on lifespan using C. elegans. The major known longevity pathways were analyzed through mutant worms and RT-qPCR assay (DAF-2, DAF-16, SKN-1, SIR-2.1, HSF-1). The possible involvement of purinergic signaling was also investigated. This...

Cadmium-Zinc interactions in a hydroponic system using Ceratophyllum demersum L.: adaptive ecophysiology, biochemistry and molecular toxicology Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Aravind,Parameswaran; Prasad,Majeti Narasimba Vara.
The interaction between an essential micronutrient, Zn and a toxic non-essential element, Cd has been comprehensively reviewed based on our experiments conducted with Ceratophyllum demersum L. in a hydroponic system. Since Cd and Zn belong to the group IIB transition elements and show similarities in chemistry, geochemistry and environmental properties, it would be one of the elemental pairs of choice to investigate metal-metal interactions. Evidence in support of the protective role of Zn against Cd toxicity in Ceratophyllum demersum L. is presented in this review. Based on our experimental results, we conclude that the antioxidant properties of Zn play an important role in counteracting Cd toxicity.

Ascorbic acid biosynthesis: a precursor study on plants Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Barata-Soares,Anderson D.; Gomez,Maria Luiza P. A.; Mesquita,Carlos Henrique de; Lajolo,Franco M..
Since the first isolation of ascorbic acid (AsA) in 1928, few papers have been published regarding the biosynthesis of AsA in plants, especially in fruits. It took as long as 1998, before Wheeler, Jones and Smirnoff, based on a study with Arabidopsis leaves, proposed what can be considered the main pathway of biosynthesis of AsA, in which L-galactose (L-GAL) is a key precursor. This paper reports the effectiveness of some precursors (cold or radiolabeled) in the biosynthesis of AsA in different plants: green sweet pepper, white-pulp guava, red-pulp guava, papaya and strawberry at two ripening stages (mature green and ripe for papaya and mature green and half red for strawberry) and broccoli.
